Song of the Week 2019 – #15 – “Have Mercy On Me”

This song, written directly from Psalm 51, is a prayer of confession and repentance. The word ”repent” seems to get a bad wrap. For some reason it can feel angry and harsh. Maybe we think of the street preacher who might be lacking in his ability to deliver the message with love and grace. But repentance is a GIFT! Just think, God Himself is offering us a new start! He offers us the gift of turning around and away from the separation and destruction of our sin. He holds out a new beginning with a heart washed white as snow through the precious blood of His Son, Jesus! He’s saying, “Confess your sins and turn from the choices that lead to death, separation, heartache, and destruction! Turn to Me and My ways, which lead to life, relationship, freedom, and joy!”

Maybe you’re a person who thinks you've gone too far, that your sins are unforgivable. This is not true! Pray or sing the prayer of this Psalm humbly from your heart and let the God of heaven, the God of the Bible, the God who made you, forgive you and give you a new life!

* This song was also written with the taking of communion in mind.

Psalm 51:1-3, 7-12 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me... Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

1 John 1:8, 9 NIV “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Acts 3:19 NIV “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,”

1 Corinthians 6:11 NIV “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
