Song of the Week 2019 – #19 – “The God Who Healeth Me” (feat. Eileen Walker)
This song is written from Exodus 15:26 “...for I am the Lord who heals you.”
When I was ten years old my mom was miraculously healed of a back injury. Because of a fall, she had surgery and three discs removed in the mid-1960’s, but her condition only worsened from there. During this season her pain was so great she could barely get out of bed in the morning and was becoming immobile. In 1970 there was a conference called the Charismatic Clinic at Melodyland (a church at that time across from Disneyland in Anaheim, CA). At the end of this conference my mom was instantly, fully, and miraculously healed! I’ll never forget her running through the parking lot with my sister and me as she shouted, “I’m healed, I’m healed!” This event profoundly affected my life and faith. Recently, I have been asking God to bring physical, inner, and spiritual healing through my life, family, church, and worship leading. I want to be a person who steps out, believes, and asks God to do the impossible. I’m praying a bold prayer that these words of truth and promise can be sung over the suffering, and that God’s healing will come in a genuine, powerful, and miraculous way, just like it did for my mom!
This song was recorded at First Love Church in Accra, Ghana. The church was blazing hot that night in temperature and God's glory! It was an honor to worship with my Ghanian brothers and sisters!
Special thanks to Michael Griffiths for inviting us to Ghana. To pastor Dag Heward-Mills and First Love Church for welcoming us. To my mom, Eileen Walker (my worship hero), for showing me that Christianity is a “get to,” not a “have to.” [In one week we will be grieving our loss, yet celebrating her 7th year graduation day to heaven. I miss you, Mom!]
Matthew 9:35 ESV “And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.”
John 14:12-14 ESV “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”
Matthew 10:1,7,8 CSB “Summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness...As you go, proclaim: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you received, freely give.”
Hebrews 13:8 CSB “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Luke 8:44-48 NLT “Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped. ‘Who touched me?’ Jesus asked. Everyone denied it, and Peter said, ‘Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.’ But Jesus said, ‘Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.’ When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed. ‘Daughter,’ he said to her, ‘your faith has made you well. Go in peace.’”
Psalm 147:3 ESV “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Malachi 4:2 “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out and playfully jump like calves from the stall.”
1 Corinthians 12:1-12 NLT “Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this... There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”
