Song of the Week 2019 – #17 – “Beatitudes Song” (feat. Abraham Laboriel)
The Beatitudes are among the most powerful and counter-cultural teachings of Jesus. Here we learn that His Kingdom is the opposite of the kingdom of this world. Here we see that Jesus values and emphasizes the inner life of the heart before the outward life. For people who feel like the strongest, most righteous, impressive, and capable, the Beatitudes are not great news. For those who recognize their real and enormous need for Him, Matthew 5:1-12 is the greatest news ever!
This teaching of Jesus also reminds us that for those who belong to Him, even in our most painful and difficult moments, we are blessed. As I was reading the Beatitudes in my devotions one day, I thought, “I’ve never put music to this passage,” and this song is what developed. I wanted to write a song that is musically sobering and also rhythmic to highlight the playing of Abraham Laboriel, my very special guest on this video.
Finally, I want to thank Abraham from the bottom of my heart. Truly Abe is one of my life heroes. He is a follower of Jesus who exemplifies humility with excellence and that's the kind of person I want to be. Not only is Abraham one of the most recorded bass players in the world, he has been a primary inspiration in showing me how to worship my God on my instrument. Thank you Abe, for the extreme honor of praising our God together through this song!
Matthew 16:25 NIV “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”
Philippians 2:3-11 NLT “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Galatians 5:22, 23 NLT “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”
